Building a new iPod, brick by brick

20 minutes in Canva, baby!

Welcome to iMod Diaries, a brand new series here on Day Soda in which I detail my journey into iPod modding. In this, the very first edition, I'm laying out the parts list for my first build, an iPod video with several quality-of-life upgrades.

The iPod

First, let’s talk about what I’m starting with. I purchased a 5th generation iPod classic, known as the iPod video before the retronym was applied, on eBay for £27.00 (and £3.39 in postage). It’s non-operational—the battery is shot to hell. As far as I can tell from other eBay listings, this seems like a fair price—working iPods go closer to £50 or £60.

This is a 30 GB model, which means it’s slightly smaller than the 60 GB model—colloquially, these are known as “thin” and “thick” case iPods. Judging from one serial number lookup site, this iPod was built in March 2007, a full seventeen years ago.
